This image comes from a 1993 exhibition of the Rare Books Collection held at Monash University Library. The exhibition notes for this image read: 'Here the woman is declaiming to the warriors of the tribe urging them to seek vengeance for the death of her grand-son, although, as Perron d'Arc tells us, the boy had died of natural causes.' Notes source. (1993) [emphasis added]

Points for discussion.

  • What are 'natural causes' in an indigenous context?
  • Does it seem as if the exhibition notes writer agreed with Perron d'Arc's view? Justify your answer.
